A while back, a couple of the guys from our office had the perfect day sailing a little 32-foot Catalina 315 around the Acapulco Bay. The wind was at our backs, and the sea turtles were swimming ten feet below the surface of the pristine water which one might describe as the same color of blue as a bottle of Cabo Wabo Tequila. We caught just the right amount of fish, a good amount of sun, and an admirable buzz from a few iced buckets of Pacificos. It was glorious.
Of course, the worst part of a vacation is when it is over. I think about that trip and ones like it often. In fact, the other day, we were installing a connection for fiber internet and I started thinking about some similarities between sailing and fiber. They have some surprising similarities and it really helps understand what you’re getting when you switch to fiber internet.
How Fiber Works
About twenty years ago, my buddies and I took a similar trip to Acapulco. Back then, we had no access to a sailboat, so we decided to rent some kayaks. It was a nice trip, but we really only got about 300 yards from the shoreline before we were worn out and ready to head back in.
Think of your current internet as paddling a kayak through a vast sea of information. Sure, the information you need is out there, but it’s going to take longer to get to it.
On the flip side, that Catalina 315 we spoke of earlier brought us out miles beyond the shore. We were able to explore mighty crags emerging from the sea, we dove in the water and took pictures with fish. It would have taken us maybe a week to go everywhere we went in one day had we been back in those kayaks.
Think of fiber internet as a lightning fast sailboat. Actually, you can even think of it as a speedboat. Either way, you get the picture. You’re able to do more and do it faster when you have the right technology.
What Fiber Does
Now that we’ve talked about how fiber is operationally similar to sailing, let’s talk about some of the similar benefits.
Sometimes when we are out there on the water and everything is coming up aces, we like to really cut into the water. It’s amazing what a great sailboat can do. You’re sitting there watching the water lap at the side of the boat one moment and then with a few maneuvers you are flying. You’re moving like air through a blowpipe onto hot glass. Everything is just folding around you.
That’s fiber. Fiber internet by Xpert can reach up to 10 gigabit download speeds. You can download a 2 GB movie or an episode of HD quality television (Pirates of the Caribbean or Black Sails maybe!) in less time than it takes to read this paragraph.
That type of speed means big things for your business. Take for example fiber’s benefit to your cloud solutions:
While as much as “90% of businesses utilize the cloud in some way,” opponents often cite slower cloud upload/download speeds and streaming as a reason for maintaining data and applications locally on physical servers.
Fiber means less time waiting for uploads and downloads, more reliable video conferencing, and exponentially faster access to your business resources. It means sailing fast on an open sea of information.
