A pit opens in your stomach as your laptop’s screen transitions from hours of work in text form to the uninterrupted blackness that only exist when there is no power – and, right as you were finally getting around to saving the crucial file you’d been toiling on all afternoon, no less.
It’s a familiar feeling: one of embarrassment and despair. One of wasted time and “should’ve”s and “could’ve”s. Luckily, today’s technology has safeguards against the unexpected.
One of the most terrifying things that can occur in the business world is accidentally deleting a crucial file you’ve been working on for months. Or when Office 365, even though it boasts a 99.9% uptime, crashes before you could think to save your work.
Thankfully, the cloud has you covered to recover deleted files where the applications themselves may not. If you have been using a cloud-based platform like Office 365 or the Google suite for your file management, there are three easy steps you can take to recovering your lost file:
Step 1 – Relax
First things first, take a deep breath. Relax. Give yourself a minute to compose yourself.
The cloud offers a variety of ways to recover almost any lost file. If you have been using a cloud-based platform any changes made are automatically backed, allowing you to track any changes within the files themselves.
Step 2 – Check the Managed Items Folder
After cooling off a bit, you have a couple of options available to you. If you saved the file, follow these simple steps;
- Open the document you were working on
- Click on File > Info
- Under “Manage Documents” click on the name of the file you were working on. Click on “Restore” and just like that the file should reappear. Huzzah!
If you didn’t save the file:
- Click File > Info > Manage Document > Recover Unsaved Documents in Word, Recover Unsaved Workbooks in Excel, or Recover Unsaved Presentations in PowerPoint.
- Click on the name of the file and click open.
- Save the file again by clicking “save as” and simply name the file again.
